As i was walking along Oxford Road today, i noticed outside Kro2 Bar a petition, and it turned out to be a petition against turning the old Kro2 bar in to a brand new Tesco. The people i spoke to had very strong feelings against this happening, saying there were far too many large businesses taking over Manchester. I got handed a leaflet explaining more about the protest, and i thought it linked in quite nicely with the Mainstream/Marginal aspect of this project. Part of the leaflet said,
' The occupation of this prime piece of retail estate on one of the busiest bus routes in Europe finds significance in the recent history of our area. The past fifteen years has bared witness to the massive expansion of the corporate businesses, such as supermarkets and fancy bars throughout the centre of Manchester. As a consequence, many Mancunians have been priced out of the city.'
I too am against more superstores like Tesco setting up here. Eventually small businesses will be completely pushed out and the country will be forced to shop at places like Tesco and Sainsbury's because of the wealth of these businesses; which will only grow and grow. Linking back to our current project, it shows that if the more marginal things in Manchester like Hotspur aren't taken more seriously, then they will be completely taken over and forgotten about.
